Routine dental examinations

Do you want to maintain a healthy, confident smile that is free from cavities or other oral health issues?

Having a regular dental examination at Tyneside Dental is the best way you can avoid toothache, fix problems early and look and feel at your best.

We call them routine but we know that many patients see them as a big deal. We never forget this so if you do feel anxious in the chair, our friendly team of professional dentists will alway put you at ease throughout your checkup, ensuring you can put your oral health first.

What is a dental examination?

A dental examination is your chance to spot any oral health issues such as cavities, gum disease and any other problems before they worsen. Also known as a checkup, it can help you avoid toothache, enjoy your favourite foods and smile with confidence.

When you visit us for a routine examination, we’ll ensure you feel totally at ease before asking you questions about your oral health and then checking your teeth, gums, and jaw for any potential problems.

If we find something, we will explain what treatment you need, outline a treatment plan including costs and refer you to another professional for treatment where necessary.

Why have a dental examination?

Having regular checkups at the dentist helps you better take care of your oral and overall health. We know that a visit to the dentist wouldn’t be at the top of your list for enjoyable things to do but it’s not without benefits. Here are the main ones:

  • You’ll identify any cavities early. These can be treated more easily and help you maintain your natural smile.
  • You’ll treat gum disease early. Plague and tartar buildup can lead to gum disease and gum problems that can be reversed if discovered.
  • You’ll detect oral cancer early. This can be more easily treated when you visit us for regular checkups.
  • You’ll learn to take better care of your mouth. Your dentist and dental hygienist can advise you on how to better brush, floss and take care of your teeth.
  • You’ll fix teeth grinding or clenching. We can help you treat bruxism (teeth grinding) to help maintain your healthy teeth.
  • You’ll detect other health issues. During your checkup, your dentist checks for other major health problems such as swollen lymph nodes and can refer you if necessary.
  • You’ll enjoy a brighter, healthier smile. Prevention is always better than cure!

Benefits of having a routine checkup

  • Discover if you have any cavities or dental issues before they worsen.

What to expect from your dental examination appointment

Your routine dental examination is your chance to check for signs of decay, gum disease, oral cancer, or other issues before they significantly affect your oral health.

When you arrive for your examination appointment, you’ll be welcomed by one of our friendly receptionists and then invited to take a seat and wait for your dentist. They will invite you into their surgery when they are ready and have a quick chat with you, asking you questions about your oral health, any problems and any new medication you might be taking.

Then they will examine your mouth, look for signs of decay, check the state of any restorations and see if there are any signs of gum disease, oral cancer or other problems by checking your tongue, cheeks, lips and jaw. This may include taking an x-ray.

If they do find any problems, they will discuss them with you and then create a treatment plan, explaining the total cost. You may also be referred to your dental hygienist or other professional for further treatment.

Rest assured that you will be made comfortable throughout the examination and everything will be explained to you in a jargon-free way.
