What are dental inlays & overlays?

Dental inlays and overlays are fantastic solutions for when you have tooth decay or damage, but a filling isn’t enough to fix it and you don’t yet need a crown.

They’re durable, natural-looking, and help you protect your natural smile.

Inlays
Similar to fillings, dental inlays fit into the top of your teeth and help fix decayed or damaged areas.

Onlays
If you have more extensive damage to your teeth, dental onlays is an excellent solution. They’re made outside of your mouth and then bonded to your natural tooth, covering the biting surfaces and sitting on top of your natural teeth.

We offer a range of beautiful handmade dental inlays or onlays made from porcelain, gold, or composite to suit your unique needs. Speak to us today to find out more.

Why get dental inlays or overlays?

By getting a dental inlay or overlay, you can protect your natural teeth, avoid further decay or damage, avoid getting a crown or implants and continue to enjoy your favourite foods.

Damaged teeth are more vulnerable to further decay and can be harder to clean than healthy teeth. This means that bacteria are more likely to get trapped, potentially leading to more cavities, gum disease and further health problems.

If regular dental fillings aren’t an option, then speak to your dentist to find out about our beautiful inlays and overlays. They will discuss whether they’re the best option for you and ensure you are fully informed before you make any decision.

Benefits of inlays and overlays

  • Protect your natural teeth and fix cavities or decay.
  • Boost your confidence.
  • Avoid further oral health issues.
  • Eliminate pain or infection.

Your dental inlay or overlay journey

If you have cavities or decay and a regular filling isn’t enough, your dentist may suggest dental inlays or overlays instead.

Before treatment is carried out, we will invite you for a chat to discuss your unique needs and requirements for your new healthier smile. We can also provide advice and answer any questions you might have.

Once this is done, we’ll outline a detailed treatment plan, including costs. If you decide that you want to go ahead, you can then you can book the two appointments you are going to need for your inlays or overlays.

First appointment
We’ll start by discussing treatment with you and answering any questions you may have. We then remove any decay and place a temporary filling if necessary. Once this is done, we will create a dental impression of your mouth and then send this to the lab where your custom dental inlay or onlay will be created.

Second appointment
When your custom-made inlays or overlays return from the lab, you can attend your second appointment. First, your dentist will sometimes need to give you a local anaesthetic, then remove the temporary filling and thoroughly clean your tooth. Next, they will fit the inlay or onlay into place, checking that you are happy before permanently fixing it to your natural teeth.

After just two appointments, you’ll have a healthier, natural-looking smile that will last.
