Endodontics

Are you suffering from pain, swelling tenderness in your gums, discharge or even bad breath?

You could have a problem with the soft tissue or root of your tooth,

Teeth can get severely damaged due to decay, infection, general wear and tear, or damage. When this happens, you will need endodontic care and possible root canal treatment.

At Tyneside Dental, we will put you at ease, recommend a course of treatment and provide you with the highest standards of care.

What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is an area of advanced dentistry that ensures that the tissues surrounding the root of a tooth are healthy and free of infection. This not only relieves dental pain but can also be a way of saving a tooth that may be damaged by fracture, infection or decay.

The most common endodontic procedure is root canal treatment. During the process, infected tissue will be removed and the tooth sealed. This preserves the natural tooth structure, avoiding the need for extraction and saving the tooth.

Why choose Endodontics?

If you have an intense and persistent toothache it may indicate that the dental pulp inside a tooth has become infected due to decay, deep cavities or dental trauma. Root canal treatment can address the issue while ensuring that your tooth does not need to be extracted.

Endodontic treatment can help to prevent further infection from spreading from the tooth’s root canal to other parts of the mouth. By addressing the infection, patients can enjoy improved oral health overall and reduce the risk of further complications.

The treatment will restore function in the tooth, allowing you to use it as normal without pain or discomfort.

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

  • Saves your natural teeth
  • Eliminates pain and infection
  • Improves your smile
  • Avoids further complications

Your Endodontics Journey

Many people are nervous about root canal treatment but the process is relatively straightforward and your dentist will minimise any potential discomfort.

Root canal treatment is usually carried out in two appointments. In the first appointment, your dentist will take an x-ray then give you a local anaesthetic. Your dentist will then carefully remove the pulp chamber and nerves at the centre of your tooth. They will then clean the root canal system, reshape it, and remove any inflammation and the causes of infection.

To prevent bacterial re-infection from occurring the dentist will then place temporary filling material inside the root canals.

At your second appointment, your dentist will remove the filling and replace it with a permanent root canal fitting. You may also be offered a crown to further protect your tooth.

Generally, it takes 7 to 10 days to recover from root canal treatment.

At Tyneside Dental, we take the utmost care to ensure you are comfortable throughout the process, saving your tooth and avoiding extraction.

FAQ's

Hidden
When is root canal treatment appropriate?
Your dentist may suggest root canal treatment if they discover that the dental pulp inside a tooth is infected, damaged or inflamed.
Is root canal treatment painful?
Modern root canal treatment has been developed to minimise any potential discomfort. A local anaesthetic will be administered ensuring you won’t feel pain during the procedure itself. It’s normal to feel some pressure or mild sensations but the dentist will ensure you are as comfortable as possible throughout. You may experience some sensitivity in the treated area for a few days which can usually be managed with painkillers.
Does root canal treatment require a general anaesthetic?
Root canal treatment will usually be carried out using a local anaesthetic. If a patient has severe anxiety or dental phobia, then sedation options may be considered depending on the complexity of the procedure. Your dentist will discuss options with you and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
How long will root canal treatment take?
The duration of any root canal treatment will vary depending on the location of the tooth, the complexity of the problem, and the extent of any infection or damage. A straightforward root canal treatment for a single tooth might take around 60 to 90 minutes. Your dentist will provide an accurate estimate based on the treatment required during your consultation.
